Dr. Richard Francis Valpy de Lisle (4th Regiment) – William Henry Drake (Balaklava), January 1855

Many congratulations, old gentleman, on your promotion. I only heard of it yesterday from Brownrigg. 1 I am delighted you have received your deserts – I wish I could go and see you but am here alone in camp – with about 130 patients to see twice a day besides numerous [sp?] &c. &c. and a second establishment of about 56 at the General Hospital. I have seen Webb 2 twice lately and am sorry he has not got his promotion. 3 Connell 4 our Qr. Master is waiting for this – so goodbye old fellow. Yrs. ever |
Footnotes
1. DACG Henry John Broderick Brownrigg. ▲
3. This dates the undated note well, as it was written after Henry was promoted to DCG on 1 January 1855. Webb was not promoted. It is interesting to note that De Lisle wrote this note to Drake on black-edged paper, that usually used when notifying deaths. Maybe, as a doctor, this was the only paper De Lisle had to hand, as he probably wrote many letters of condolence. ▲
4. Quartermaster William Connell, 4th (The King’s Own) Regiment of Foot. ▲
5. Dr. Richard Francis Valpy De Lisle, surgeon of the 4th (The King’s Own) Regiment of Foot. It is interesting that he was writing on note paper with a black border, traditionally used when the bearer of bad tidings, or in a period of mourning. It suggests to me that this is the kind of paper he used most in his role as surgeon of the regiment. ▲
