17.  Emily Hobhouse was a British welfare campaigner and feminist who brought the terrible conditions of the camps to the attention of the British population and parliament. She was an impressive woman who continued her work after the war. She was so well regarded by the Boer women that they raised money to buy her a house for her retirement and also for her campaigns during WWI. After her death in 1926, her ashes were taken to South Africa and interred in the Vrouemonument (Women’s Monument) in Bloemfontein. Descriptions of her life and contribution can by found at Wikipedia, the Anglo-Boer War Museum, and Angloboerwar.com.
